Patience and a gentle approach works best

I'm Rik, one of the volunteers at the Suomen Rautatiemuseo. I'm hyvinkääläinen, Scottish and retired.

My interest in volunteering started as a kid from my days in the Scouts. What I’ve carried with me throughout life from those days is seeking to learn new things and making a positive contribution to society. Whenever I have spare time, I get involved in something worthwhile e.g. environmental, humanitarian, community and cultural activities. At the railway museum, I’m using my practical skills to support the restoration of museum objects at Kasiraide.

I’m involved in the restoration of a Lumiaura (Etv-Rto 28) and the last surviving, 2-axle wooden local traffic railway carriage built in 1927 (Ek 1004). The plan is to restore these units to their original condition. In the case of Ek 1004, when fully restored, it will be connected to the locomotive Leena on event days.

The museum staff provide guidance on the methods we apply.

With Lumiaura, we are currently preparing exterior surfaces for painting. We use a scraper and paint brush, and of course, wearing protective safety equipment. The museum staff provide guidance on the methods we apply.

On Ek 1004 carriage we are preparing the compartment arched ceiling for the next phase of restoration according to the plan. Currently, the work involves carefully removing wallpaper from the original plywood ceiling. The skills required are typically the same as in home renovation: patience and a gentle approach work best.

It’s not all work. At Café Lumiaura, beside the track we take time-out to chat about the past and future.

In addition to meeting new people, volunteering is a fun way to learn about the development of Finnish railways as well as the professional approach to conservation and restoration in practice.
